At ALFA, we are proud to announce the release of the first issue of the REPTiS project newsletter — a strategic European initiative we are actively involved in REPTiS is a major project to strengthen Europe’s industrial autonomy in the production of titanium powders for powder metallurgy and component manufacturing. The newsletter is now available at www.reptis.eu, with new issues scheduled every six months.
What is REPTiS and why does it matter?
REPTiS (Resilient European Powder supply chain for Titanium alloys) is a Horizon Europe-funded project that aims to establish a sustainable, EU-based supply chain for titanium and titanium alloy powders. These materials are vital for key strategic sectors such as civil aviation, defense, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, including medical applications.
Given the EU’s heavy reliance on imports and ongoing geopolitical instability in raw material markets, REPTiS focuses on scaling an innovative, energy-efficient and environmentally friendlier alternative to traditional processes: the Velta Ti process, developed by our Ukrainian partner Velta RD Titan.
Highlights from the first newsletter
- Project launch: REPTiS officially started on September 1st, 2024, with a total duration of 48 months
- Main goal: Industrialize a new process for producing titanium powders that bypasses the energy-intensive Kroll + EIGA route.
- Technical progress: Protocols for ilmenite ore sampling and powder assessment standards have been developed.
- A pilot plant is being set up to reach Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7).
- Key meetings: Kick-off meeting in France and second general assembly in Prague.
- Events and outreach: Participation in Euro PM2024 and Raw Materials Week 2024
- Active communication strategy including a website, social media presence, and representation at major industry events.
- Advantages of the Velta Ti Process:
- Up to 83% reduction in carbon footprint compared to conventional methods.
- Zero-waste philosophy with valuable byproduct recovery.
- Enhanced powder quality for additive manufacturing and metal injection molding (MIM).
Our role in REPTiS
At ALFA, we’re applying our expertise in metal injection molding (MIM) to manufacture real-world components using the new powders developed in REPTiS, particularly for the medical and consumer goods sectors. This will help validate the performance of these powders as a viable alternative to current market options.
