MIM (Metal Injection Moulding) is a process that offers the flexibility and productivity of thermoplastic injection moulding and, at the same time, the mechanical performance of metal parts. Highly complex, precise and reliable parts are obtained, with mechanical properties similar to those of any machined, micro-cast, laminated, etc. material.
Combining the best of each technology
It combines the advantages of sintering processes with those of thermoplastic injection moulding, going well beyond the usual parameters of both processes (with densities that can reach 99%). Heat treatment can be applied later to add other mechanical characteristics.
Comparison with other technologies
As can be seen from the graph, it is an unrivalled technology for the production of long runs of small parts with high geometric complexity and high mechanical performance.

Process
1- RAW MATERIAL
A homogeneous mixture of metal powder and polymer, plasticisers and lubricants that enable injection moulding.
2- MOULD DESIGN
A mould is designed based on the customer’s needs.
3-INJECTION
Injection of the mixture to produce the “green part”.
4- DEBINDING
Additives and binders are removed while maintaining the geometry of the part.
5- SINTERING
Heat treatment that produces the union of the metallic particles and the final consolidation of the part.
6- ADDITIONAL PROCESSES
Heat treatment, calibration, machining, surface treatment, painting, assembly, polishing…

Recommendations
The design should follow the same guidelines as for thermoplastic injection moulding, plus some others inherent to metal forming processes.
